LIF（白细胞抑制因子），名字来源于它能够诱导骨髓白血病细胞晚期分化。其它细胞活性方面的特性还包括：促进不同类型靶细胞生长和细胞分化，影响骨髓细胞代谢，衰亡，神经发育，胚胎生长和发炎。
LIF 已经应用于鼠胚胎干细胞培养以确定这些干细胞处于未分化状态。然而，LIF 不能用于人胚胎干细胞培养。
StemRD 公司生产的LIF 是从大肠杆菌中获取含有181个氨基酸，分子量为20kDa的可溶性单链蛋白质中制取。这条未标记单链蛋白质通过一系列层析纯化获得。

LIF, derives its name from its ability to induce the terminal differentiation of myeloid leukaemic cells. Other properties attributed to the cytokine include: the growth promotion and cell differentiation of different types of target cells, influence on bone metabolism, cachexia, neural development, embryogenesis and inflammation.
LIF, has been used in mouse embryonic stem cell culture to maintain the stem cells in an undifferentiated state, however, LIF is not required for culture of human embryonic stem cells.
StemRD produces LIF in soluble form from E.coli as a single-chain polypeptide containing 181 amino acids with a molecular mass of 20 kDa. This non-tagged protein is purified by a series of chromatography.
